Fermanagh are through to last eight of the All-Ireland Football Championship after beating Mayo by a point in Saturday night's qualifier at Markievicz Park.

It is a tremendous result for the Ernesiders who have been making steady progress under Dominic Corrigan.

Saturday's game was always a tight affair against a Mayo outfit manager by former Fermanagh boss John Maughan.

Fermanagh led six points to five at half-time.

Tom Brewster scored three of the Ernesiders points before the break, Stephen Maguire got two and Raymond Gallagher one.

Teemore clubman Ciaran O'Reilly scored two early in the second half as Fermanagh kept their noses in front.

Mayo got the only goal of the game through Trevor Mortimer but points from Maguire, James Sherry, Ronan McCabe and Gallagher turned out to be just enough to send the Fermanagh fans home celebrating a famous victory.

  • In the All Ireland Hurling Championship, Wexford beat Waterford 1-20 to 0-18 in Saturday night's qualifying game at Nowlan Park.
