Sunday's win was a sweet victory for Antrim boss PJ O'Hare |
As Antrim forward Kevin Madden remarked afterwards, "PJ O'Hare is a man of few words" but there was no disguising the Saffron boss' satisfaction after Sunday's win over Cavan.
To put it mildly, O'Hare's appointment for his second stint as Antrim boss was not universally welcomed in the Saffron county.
A number of Antrim players made behind-the-scenes moves to prevent the ratification of O'Hare's appointment so the big St Gall's man was entitled to a broad smile after Sunday's win.
"I've looked forward to this moment," acknowledged one of the gentlemen of Ulster GAA.
"I was in charge for four years in my previous stint and was beaten by a kick of a ball in every game but the last one.
"This time it has come good for me and I think the players deserve this bit of success".
O'Hare had spoken before the game of his belief that Antrim could beat Cavan so as far as he was concerned, the victory was no surprise.
"We have quality players but some people just don't realise how good these fellows are.
We were ready today and Cavan didn't know what hit them |
"I'm absolutely pleased for the clubs in Antrim who have given me such great support which I really appreciate".
The manager's decision to pick his son Darren was thoroughly vindicated by the full-forward's two first half goals.
"I'm very hard on him sometimes but he showed today that he's capable of playing at this level".
O'Hare the younger paid tribute to his father's preparation for the game.
"He had us ready for every eventuality," said Darren.
"We've worked since last December over at the Mary Peters Track.
"We've done all the running and got all the tactics.
Tyrone next
"We were ready today and Cavan didn't know what hit them".
The full-forward modestly played down his part in Antrim's win.
"The two goals were from a yard and a half each and were made by other people but to score two goals on my championship debut, I couldn't ask for more".
Antrim's performance is unlikely to have had Tyrone quaking in their boots but the Saffron goalscorer insisted he felt positive about his team's chances in next month's Ulster semi-final.
"I'd love to have a go at this Tyrone team. This Antrim team can do it".
