Wendy Houvenaghel will go for gold in Poland after qualifying fastest in the women's individual pursuit heats at the Track Cycling World Championships.

The Olympic silver medal winner clocked three minutes 29.491 seconds to reach the final more than 1.5 seconds quicker than Alison Shanks of New Zealand.

The two will race for gold and silver in Pruszkow on Wednesday evening.

The 34-year-old from Upperlands was runner-up to Great Britian team-mate Rebecca Romero at the Beijing Games.
