Derry and Antrim both beaten
Dominic McKinley praised his players after the game
Dominic McKinley's side put up a creditable display against Tipp

Derry 2-14 4-19 Tipperary

Derry produced a creditable display against a Tipperary side who scarcely bothered getting out of second gear at Dungiven.

When Dominic McKinley's side played Tipperary last season, they were annihilated 5-23 to 0-3.

A similar hammering never looked likely on this occasion even though Tipperary were always on control.

Goals from Eugene O'Neill and Eoin Kelly helped Tipperary to a 2-8 to 0-7 lead at half-time.

Oliver Collins, who went on to rattle up a total of 1-11, hit five first half points for the Oak Leafers while Dominic Magill and youngster Peter O'Kane were also on target.

Liam Cahill notched Tipp's third goal in the 56th minute to put the visitors 3-16 to 0-12 ahead.

Antrim shocked

Eugene O'Neill grabbed a fourth goal for Tipperary but to their credit, Derry battled right to the end and goals from Collins and Danny McGrellis helped put a more respectable look on the scoreboard.

Derry managed Dominic McKinley praised his players after the match.

"We did well. The players produced a very positive response after our recent hammerings by Cork and Offaly," said McKinley.

"I thought our half-backs were excellent and while Ollie Collins got the bulk of the scores the forwards did very well to earn those frees".

In Division 2A, leaders Antrim suffered a surprise 2-15 to 1-15 defeat against Westmeath at Mullingar.

Westmeath had lost two of their opening three games and weren't expected to provide Antrim with a stiff test.

However, the Leinster county led 1-10 to 0-6 at the interval and held on to claim a shock win.

The win is a blow to Antrim's chances of achieving promotion to Division One.
