Derry lose to Wexford

Derry 1-14 Wexford 2-16

Wexford had been expected to win this Division 1B fixture at Lavey, but they had to battle for the points against a young Derry side.

The Oak Leafers had been seven points ahead with half an hour to play.

But Wexford's strength, boosted by the advantage of the breeze, eventually won the day.

Wexford had made a handy start with an Anthony O'Leary goal after just three minutes.

But Derry, with the strong wind in their favour, took control with Gregory Briggs playing a starring role in midfield.

Derry led 0-13 to 1-05 at half-time and they looked to be in a winning position when Danny McGrellis hit a goal early iin the second half.

But the northern side failed to score in the last 25 minutes as Wexford finished the stronger.

O'Leary got his second goal for Wexford who then hit six unanswered points to secure a five-point winning margin for the Yellowbellies.
