Players object to O'Hare
PJ O'Hare has yet to name his backroom team
PJ O'Hare's appointment was something of a surprise
PJ O'Hare appointment as the new Antrim football manager has been ratified - despite objections from a 14-strong group of county players.

Monday's county committee meeting rubberstamped last week's executive decision to appoint the St Gall's clubman.

However, that was inspite of a letter being received from 14 players calling for the appointment to be deferred.

The meeting decided not to consider the contents of the letter because it had not been signed.

However, it has been confirmed that the 14 Antrim players drafted the letter at a meeting in a Belfast hotel over the weekend.

The letter stated that O'Hare's appointment would set back Antrim football "20 years".

Brian White: Previous Antrim boss

The players have said that they are not launching a "personal attack" on O'Hare but that they are unhappy with the way the new boss had been appointed.

O'Hare's appointment last week was something of a surprise and he has yet to announce his backroom team.

One of the 14 Antrim players concerned told BBC Sport Online that squad members are concerned that the new boss will not get the resources he required to compete at intercounty level.

The player, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the he expected that the players would wait to see O'Hare's first panel before deciding their next move.

"I would be quite certain that there will be players who won't want to be involved because of the way the appointment was made.

Rejected assistance

"But the general feeling is that we will wait to see the composition of the panel and PJ's backroom panel before making a decision.

"Players could give it a month and if it proves to be a total shambles, then maybe walk away".

The unnamed player confirmed that squad members believe that the county board gives more resources to Dinny Cahill's hurling squad.

Reports claim that the Antrim board rejected the offer of financial assistance from a prominent businessman which would have ensured the appointment of a prominent manager from outside the county.
