Calls for end to road racing
31-year-old Gary Jess who died following a crash in the Superbike event
Gary Jess died at Dundrod on Saturday
Billy Nutt, the former Clerk of the Course for the Ulster Grand Prix, has called for the end of road racing following the death of Gary Jess at Dundrod on Saturday.

Nutt's comments came after two English riders were killed during practice for the Manx Grand Prix on Monday.

Nutt, who stepped down from the job last year following a number of fatalities, said that increasing commercialisation had put too much pressure on riders.

Four riders and a race marshal were killed at the UGP during Nutt's eight-year reign in charge.

Jess, a 31-year-old local rider from Moira, County Down, died at the start of the first Superbike race on Saturday when he collided with another rider at the Deer's Leap.

Nutt, who put in place stringent safety measures at Dundrod, said that he is still very perturbed at events.

There is immense pressure on riders to perform due to sponsorship and media coverage

''I was involved in road racing for 30 years, but I couldn't stand seeing talented young lives being lost any more,'' said Nutt.

''I couldn't see any way of preventing more deaths.

''The sport has become far more commercial and there is immense pressure on riders to perform due to sponsorship and media coverage.

''This pressure together with the speed and power of modern motorcycles means that the slightest mistake can be fatal.''

Nutt calls for a more safer option that would help curtail the fatalities.

''A safer alternative would be to have purpose-built tracks built,'' he said.
