Europe's superstars will be in America for the US PGA Championship but the week nevertheless represents a huge opportunity for the go-ahead Ballyliffin club. Ballyliffin has been described as the Ballybunion of Ireland's north. Nick Faldo was so enchanted by the old Ballyliffin links when he first visited in 1993 that he tried to buy the club. By that stage, plans were already in train for a second course on the dune-filled 365 acres of magnificent links land. By August 1995, the new Glashedy course, designed by Pat Ruddy and Tom Craddock, had opened to acclaim and within three years the Irish Women's Open was being staged at the new links.
Ballyliffin has continued to go from strength to strength over the past four years. A careful public relations strategy has cultivated the best of terms with the British and Irish media. The Glashedy course, despite only being only seven years old, is already confortably within the top 100 course in respected magazine Golf World's British Isles rankings. All who play the Glashedy track agree that it is likely to push higher up the list very quickly as its reputation expands still further. Club general manager Cecil Doherty says this week's European Tour event represents a massive opportunity for Ballyliffin. "It's another huge milestone for the club and tremendous recognition of our achievements to date and the current standard of our golf courses.
"We are all absolutely delighted and are fully committed to presenting both ourselves and the entire region to the world in the finest light," he added. The North West of Ireland Open, always played on the same week as the US PGA Championship, attracts European Tour players and the best of the professionals who compete on the Challenge circuit. German Tobias Dier won last year's tournament which was played at Slieve Russell in county Cavan and will be among the favourites after his recent surprise victory at the TNT Dutch Open. Former Volvo PGA Champions Andrew Oldcorn and Costantino Rocca will also be in the field as will Ryder Cup players Peter Baker, Paul Broadhurst, Steven Richardson, Andrew Coltart and Philip Walton. Ballyliffin professionals Francis Howley and Conor Mallon are among those to have received invitations to compete and will be hoping to utilise their local knowledge effectively. Mallon predicts that calm conditions could lead to a score of around 17 under winning although he is confident that the Glashedy course will present a stiff test to the European pros. Other Irishmen in the field include last year's British Amateur Champion Michael Hoey, Warrenpoint man Paddy Gribben and Waterville's David Higgins. | See also: 12 Aug 02 | USPGA 11 Aug 02 | Golf 28 Aug 01 | N Ireland Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top N Ireland stories now: Links to more N Ireland stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
