Giants snap up blueliner
Belfast Giants coach Dave Whistle
Whistle is looking to make more new signings
Superleague champions Belfast Giants have signed defenceman Robby Sandrock from East Coast Hockey League outfit the Johnstown Chiefs.

The 24-year-old American is coach Dave Whistle's first new signing for the 2002-2003 season.

Sandrock has made quite a name for himself in the North American minor leagues as a defenceman with a difference - he scores more goals than he stops.

He helped the Johnstown Chiefs make the ECHL play-offs last season, having joined them last year from the Greensboro Generals.

"His coach in Johnstown, Scott Allen, said he added him to his roster specifically to improve their play off campaign and he did just that," Whistle commented.

"He knew that to land a guy who led his team in points - and a defenceman at that - would cost him, but he had no qualms trading two guys for him.

"This season he could have stepped up to the American Hockey League but was persuaded to showcase his talents over here in Europe and he can't wait to get to Belfast.

I couldn't find an experienced guy for the role I had in mind but I found Robby and he's eager to prove himself
Belfast Giants coach Dave Whistle

"He's young and this will only be his fourth year as a pro, but he could prove to be a very important addition.

"I was looking for an offensive-minded defenceman, especially for our powerplay and really needed him to be a right-handed shot and Robby fits the bill.

"He's a smart player, he sees the ice and reads the play well, he's a good passer, has a strong shot and anchors the point on the powerplay.

"I couldn't find an experienced guy for the role I had in mind but I found Robby and he's eager to prove himself," Whistle added.

Although not an overly physical player, the 6ft, 13st 7lb defender from Williams Lake, British Columbia will still add size to the blueline when he's not leading the charge towards the opposition goal.

It looks like Sandrock will not be the Giants' last new signing, as Whistle continues to target experienced players.

The coach is particularly looking for a no-nonsense defenceman and forward to add some extra toughness to the team, along with proven goal scorers and a top-class netminding duo.
