Sainz won the world championship on two occasions |
Rally legend Carlos Sainz has been persuaded to extend his return to the world championship after a successful comeback in Turkey at the weekend. The 43-year-old finished fourth in a one-off return in Turkey last weekend's in place of Citroen's Francois Duval.
And Sainz has agreed to a request by Citroen to stand in for Duval at the next event, Greece's Acropolis Rally.
"My mind is made up. I have no intention of staging a comeback. This is my final contribution," he said.
Citroen rally boss Guy Frequelin said: "What Carlos brought us this weekend was fantastic, especially given the conditions, which were particularly difficult. But that's how you can recognise a great driver.
"On top of that, the team derived such pleasure from working with him again that I naturally asked him to stand in for us one final time.
"I am aware that I am asking him to make another big effort. But I have sworn to respect his request not to ask him any more to drive in the World Rally Championship."
Fellow Citroen driver Sebastien Loeb won the race to make it four wins a row, winning by nearly a minute from Subaru's Petter Solberg.
