Sainz retired at the end of the 2004 season

The Spaniard has been brought in by his old team Citroen for the 3-5 June race to replace Francois Duval, who crashed out of the Cyprus Rally last weekend.

The 43-year-old Sainz, world champion in 1990 and 1992, has not driven since retiring at the end of last season.

"This one-off participation will not lead to his comeback in the championship," said a team statement.

"Citroen's results in the manufacturers' championship are not matching our goals," said team boss Guy Frequelin.

"To give ourselves more time to think about the strategy we will adopt for the rest of the season and considering Carlos' record and his consistent performance during the past two years, I've asked him if he could drive for us in Turkey."

Sainz added: "With this temporary measure I hope to contribute to the team's success."

Duval's crash in the Rally of Cyprus was his third retirement of the season and left him 11th in the drivers' standings with only five points.

The Belgian is 40 points behind his team-mate Sebastien Loeb, who leads the championship.

Citroen are second in the constructors' championship, nine points behind Peugeot.
