Birmingham Brummies strengthened their grip on second position in speedway's Elite League with weekend victories at Rye House and Newport.

Jason Lyons (13) and Tomasz Piszcz (12) led the charge at Rye House as the Brummies won out 46-43.

They clinched the meeting in the final heat with a 5-1 success over home riders Chris Neath and Robert Mear.

Richard Sweetman (13) and Jay Herne (11) took the honours at Newport as Birmingham triumphed 51-41.

The Brummies made light of the absence of Piszcz in south Wales, pulling away in heat eight thanks to a fine effort from Herne and Rusty Harrison. Sweetman came home first in heat 14 to secure an impressive double for the Perry Barr-based club.
