Eastbourne Eagles are currently fifth in the Elite League table |
Eastbourne Eagles have defended the decision to cut the teams in this season's play-offs from six to four. The new system, which was passed by the Elite League clubs on Wednesday, could negatively affect the Eagles as they currently lie fifth in the table. Eagles promoter Bob Dugard told BBC Sussex: "We changed it in the winter thinking it would be a good idea, without consulting with television. "We really shouldn't have changed the old system anyway." Dugard added: "The television companies have said it's impossible for them to give the coverage that they wanted to give to the play-offs. "As the only Saturday night track we're always struggling for dates. We had to vote in favour and most other clubs had a similar problem." Lakeside Hammers are another Elite League club to have backed the decision by the Elite League clubs. The play-offs are due to take place in September and October. Eastbourne's next fixture is against second-placed Wolves at Monmore Green on Monday, 15 June.
