England international Simon Stead has agreed terms to ride for the Swindon Robins in 2009.

The 26-year-old joins from Belle Vue, having spent last season on loan to Elite League rivals Coventry.

Stead will start the year on a 6.53 average, making him third heat leader behind Leigh Adams and Troy Batchelor.

"Swindon's a track I've enjoyed in the past. When you look at the team being put together, we're in for a good year," Stead told BBC Wiltshire.

"If there's a track where I can put my career back on track, it's at Swindon.

"In the last few years my career has not developed as fast as I would have liked. Some of that is down to injuries and some of it's been down to having faith in things that just haven't worked.

"I think the set-up at Swindon will benefit me. The team manager Alun Rossiter is good at creating team spirit. I know the co-owner Gary Patchett, and Leigh Adams as the skipper is one of the best riders in the world.

"I'm looking forward to riding for Swindon, but I must put on record my thanks to Coventry. It was a bit of a difficult year at the club last season, and despite it all, the fans and the management stood by me."

The signing of Stead takes Swindon's team building to the halfway mark as he joins Adams, Batchelor and Jurica Pavlic in the 2009 line-up.

The new speedway season gets underway in mid-March, with the Robins expected to be among the Elite League front runners.
