Acting captain Johnston was delighted with the performance |
A convincing 53-38 victory over Wolverhampton Wolves on Thursday has moved the Ipswich Witches up to sixth place in the Elite League table. Stand-in skipper Steve Johnston told BBC Radio Suffolk: "All the boys put it in again and stuck to the job for a really good win." Five riders won heats and all of these were paid for double-figure scores, with only Chris Schramm missing out. A string of five consecutive heat wins set up the victory. The meeting began with a 4-2 for Wolves but the Witches struck back with a 5-1 from Robert Miskowiak and Johnston over Fredrik Lindgren. An extraordinary heat eight saw three riders excluded in separate incidents and Piotr Swiderski cruised round for a 3-0 advantage. Wolves manager Pete Adams used all his resources with tactical double-points rides for Lindgren and Niels Kristian Iversen. But they had little impact as four of his team contributed just four points between them. Swiderski produced the ride of the night in heat 13 when he stalked Lindgren for three-and- a-half laps before swooping past to join Jarek Hampel for a 5-1. Johnston said: "I don't want to be anywhere near the bottom of the League again. I'm confident of making the play-offs. This side is well capable of winning home and away. "We've got the riders who can cover for Chris Louis at Foxhall by rider replacement, but it may be different away from home. We must choose our guests carefully." Next up for the Witches is another home match against Eastbourne on Thursday, 15 May.
