Newcastle Diamonds' rider George Stancl believes promotion to the Elite League is a definite possibility this season.

The Czech international has plenty of experience at Conference level and thinks there is enough talent in the Diamonds to put them in contention.

Stancl told BBC Radio Newcastle: "The ambition is for us to finish on top or in the play-off places.

"It's possible we can get promoted. We look good from one to seven and I think we want it more than we did last year."

I call myself the 'monkey behind the handlebars'

Newcastle rider George Stancl

The 33-year-old has become a fans favourite since joining up with Newcastle after a spell in Scotland with Glasgow.

Last season he registered a point average of 8.19 and admits speedway is as much about enjoyment as it is competition.

"I call myself the 'monkey behind the handlebars', it's some kind of adrenaline rush," he grinned.

"Speedway is our sport and we love it."
