Haslam takes first win of season

Leon Haslam
Haslam led Shane Byrne and Michael Rutter to win at Knockhill

Leon Haslam, of the Louth-based HM Plant Honda team, claimed his first victory of the season in the British Superbike Championships at Knockhill.

Haslam took the win in race two when it was red-flagged after championship leader Shane Byrne crashed heavily.

He crashed out of race one as Suzuki's Tom Sykes took his third win in a row.

Haslam's team-mate Cal Crutchlow was seventh in race two after crashing in the first as Byrne, despite his non-finish, increased his advantage.

Haslam said: "I've had trouble getting to grips with the Honda, but the last few rounds I've been feeling really confident with the bike and the team have been right behind me.

This win is long overdue and I'm made up

Boston's Ben Wilson after victory in the R1 Cup
In Supersport Ruskington's Rob Frost maintained his good run of form with seventh place on the Buff Racing Triumph.

Boston's Ben Wilson also claimed his first win of the season in the R1 Cup in slippery conditions, battling through from the second row of the grid and holding off the attentions of series leader Jon Kirkham who slid off the track while trying to pass him at the hairpin.

Wilson said: "This win is long overdue and I'm made up. I knew I had to be aggressive at the start and it paid off."

The victory made up for his performance in the Superstock race in which he crashed at the hairpin, while Lincoln's Lee Jackson on the NCT Yamaha also fell victim to the treacherous surface.

Meanwhile Peter Hickman from Alford struggled to 13th place on the Ultimate Racing Yamaha.

"I am pleased I got a few points," admitted Hickman. "But I can't understand why I'm just not fast around this circuit, I quite enjoy it but can't seem to get and speed around here."
