Michael Dunlop said that he made his own decision to ride in this week';s TT races on the Isle of Man.

Michael Dunlop is to ride a Superbike for World Endurance team Phase One Yamaha at the Isle of Man TT Races.

Dunlop, who made a late decision to race at the event this week, will also compete in the Supersport 600 races and the 250cc and 125cc races at Billown.

Dunlop was offered the ride with Phase One after regular rider James McBride was injured in practice on Monday.

The team held talks with Michael Rutter earlier in the week but he was unable to race due to other commitments.

Michael Dunlop made his debut at the TT last year, having won at the Manx Grand Prix in 2006.

The 20-year-old, whose father Robert died in an accident during practice for the North-West 200 on 15 May, made a last-minute decision to take part this year after earlier indicating he would not race.

"I just felt it was something I had to do," Dunlop told the BBC.

"It was a hard decision as I had to think about my mum and I don't think she really wanted me to do it with the safety asepct in mind. It's a hard, tough circuit.

"We sat down and talked about it but, in the end, I made my own decision. I'll see how it goes and if I don't like it, I can pack my bags and come home again.

"When you go out onto that course you are very much on your own and it's up to yourself but I was able to lap at over 120mph last year as a newcomer so I hope to increase that to 124 or 125mph this time."

Michael added that "racing helps to take his mind off" his dad's death but adds that "normality returns the moment I take my helmet off".

"We are just sitting in the house and I decided it would be best to get on a motorbike. I hope it is the right thing to do.

Michael achieved an emotional win in the 250cc race at the North-West just two days after his father's fatal accident.

"To me the 250 win was just another hard thing to go through and it is difficult now when I look right and left, and my father is not there to back me," added Michael.

Michael's brother William opted to stop road racing and concentrate on circuit events after his father's death.

The TT starts on Saturday, 31 May with a Superbike race over six laps of the Mountain Course and a sidecar event.
