Toseland held a 38-point lead coming into Brno |
Championship leader James Toseland won the first race of Sunday's World Superbikes double-header at Brno in the Czech Republic. The British Honda rider held off Suzuki's Max Biaggi and Japanese duo Yukio Kagayama and Noriyuki Haga.
Toseland then finished second behind Biaggi in the day's second race with Michel Fabrizio third on the DFX Honda.
Biaggi led from the start but was passed on the opening lap before regaining the advantage on lap 14.
Toseland's victory in race one was his first win for three months and that, combined with second place in the other race, allowed him to strengthen his position at the top of the standings.
"It's been a while since I won, that's for sure," said the Briton, who now leads Biaggi by 43 points.
"What a great race. At Misano we'd fallen behind on electronics but it's been a huge effort from the team to get up from sixth to first so thanks to them.
"I knew I needed it to be hot to run the tyre I wanted to run and it just played out perfectly."
Toseland grabbed the race one lead from Biaggi and was then involved in a four-way battle which included Yukio Kagayama on the second Suzuki and Haga before holding on to win by 0.273 seconds
