Bayliss has been in fine form on his Ducati this season |
World Superbikes leader Troy Bayliss failed to equal the record of nine straight wins after crashing out of race two at San Marino. The Australian, who earlier had claimed eight in a row after winning race one, worked his way up to third place but slid out on the 17th lap.
Australia's Andrew Pitt claimed his first ever World Superbike triumph after dominating the second race.
Defending champion Troy Corser had a miserable weekend as he crashed twice.
In the second race in Misano, he was leading but slid off while negotiating the final chicane of the eighth lap.
His title defence now looks in serious trouble as he trails Bayliss by a whopping 105 points.
Bayliss did finish the race in 12th after desperately picking up his Ducati out of the gravel.

The incident ruined his chances of equalling the record of nine straight wins which is held by Colin Edwards and Neil Hodgson.
Earlier, Bayliss continued his domination of the championship despite starting from seventh on the grid in race one.
The Australian took almost half the race to work his way to the front but still took his eighth consecutive race win.
James Toseland, the 2004 champion, gained 20 points and moved up to second in the standings after finishing second in the first race.
He looked to be heading for a similar result in race two but he ran way wide over the gravel on the 18th lap and finished eighth.
With Corser, Bayliss and Toseland out of the reckoning, Pitt was left an easy run-in to win in 40 minutes, 18.671 seconds.
"I don't know how I feel at the moment, it's unbelievable. I'm shivering all over, what a relief," said Pitt.
"The last lap I could see the crowd going crazy and was able to enjoy it. What a day."
The Yamaha rider finished ahead of Brazilian Alex Barros while Nori Haga of Japan was third.
Haga was involved in a thrilling battle with Britain's Chris Walker for most of the race and just managed to hold on to the final podium place.
In race one, Suzuki's Yukio Kagayama was third while Barros came fourth.
Bayliss now leads the championships standings by 94 points from Haga.
