Making history

Renault

Team principal: Flavio Briatore
Years in F1: 12
2005 position: 1st
Drivers' titles: 1
Constructors' titles: 1

Renault announced a new era in 2005 by claiming both the drivers' and constructors' titles and in style too.

They got the season off to a flying start by winning the first three races and went on to claim eight in all on their way to an unexpected double.

The R25 car was slightly behind McLaren's MP4-20 in terms of absolute pace for most of the season.

But the consistency of the team and drivers Fernando Alonso and Giancarlo Fischella saw them hold on.

In hindsight, team boss Flavio Briatore's decision to give up on their battle with BAR for second place overall in 2004 in favour of concentrating on their new car was inspired.

Renault hit the ground running, and the margin they built up in the first three races while others were still sorting themselves out gave them a cushion that proved valuable.

It allowed Alonso to retire after making a rare error in Canada and still hang on to a huge lead in the championship.

It is the all-round quality of Renault's car and team that has put them in this position - the R25 has impressive grip levels, a strong engine and driver-friendly handling.

In the cockpit, Fernando Alonso delivered on his potential by winning the title with two races to spare.

In Alonso and team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella, who won the first race, Renault have a good combination of youth and experience, even if Fisichella endured a difficult season.
