After missing out on an F1 debut with Renault, Lopez gets his chance with USF1

Jose Maria Lopez becomes the latest in a long line of Argentine Formula 1 drivers after signing for rookie team US F1.

The 26-year-old learnt his trade racing karts, where he came up against 2008 F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, before moving to single-seater racing.

In 2005, Lopez raced in the inaugural GP2 Series against future F1 peers Nico Rosberg and Heikki Kovalainen.

Lopez, who goes by the nickname Pechito, had his first taste of F1 as a test driver for Renault in 2006, after being signed to their development programme in 2004.

He completed his journey to F1 by becoming the first driver to be signed by the American-based team US F1 for their debut 2010 campaign.
