FIA race director Charlie Whiting denies that the new rules are a political decision

Charlie Whiting, race director for the sport's governing body the FIA, says the new engine mapping rules are not an attempt to slow Red Bull down. "I am aware of some stories being written but to be frank with you I know it is not a political one," said Whiting. "I know it is a purely technical intervention from our side and I feel perfectly comfortable with that."

Mercedes team boss Ross Brawn says the latest changes to engine regulations for 2014 will mean Formula 1 technology will have far more relevance for the road car industry. "There is a justification for relevance in the type of engines we have in the future. We don't want to end up as a dinosaur in five or 10 years."

Pirelli want to change F1's qualifying rules to stop drivers choosing not to run in Q3 (the final part of qualifying) in a bid to save tyres for the race.
