The FIA is planning to beef up its disciplinary rules with the introduction of new regulations in time for the British Grand Prix in July. The proposal is that drivers who receive three reprimands in a season will be handed a five-place grid penalty.

McLaren's Jenson Button, who won in Monaco in 2009 with Brawn GP, believes there is a chance of "out-thinking and out-driving" Red Bull this weekend. "There won't be any overtaking in Monaco, even with DRS [drag reduction systems], unless you are on completely different strategies or different tyres. Monaco is going to be a proper thinking race… looking after tyres… a tricky one."

The FIA has confirmed that the drag-reduction system will be banned in the Monaco tunnel. Drivers had expressed concern that the adjustable rear wing, which increases straight-line speed, could be dangerous at that part of the circuit.

Pirelli's super soft tyres will make their 2011 debut in Monaco, with motorsport director Paul Hembery warning: "The supersoft rubber is designed to provide outstanding performance over a short period of time but this comes at the price of durability, so all the teams will have to consider their strategies carefully."
