Pastor Maldonado has refused to confirm speculation he has already signed to make his F1 debut with the Williams team in 2011. The new GP2 champion has been testing in Abu Dhabi this week with Williams and Hispania, the Spanish team who will use a gearbox supplied by Williams next year. Williams has cleared a 2011 race seat alongside Rubens Barrichello by ousting Nico Hulkenberg, whose manager Willi Weber said on Monday that the team has "probably already done a deal with Pastor Maldonado".

Williams will use a battery-based kinetic energy recovery system in 2011. The team has made the switch from the flywheel unit it has been developing for the past two years because of the packaging opportunities battery power offers in the wake of the refuelling ban at the end of last season.

Pirelli will officially begin its three-year stint as F1's official tyre supplier on Friday when all 12 teams get the chance to try out the Italian company's rubber for the very first time. The test at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi will mark Pirelli's return to the pinnacle of the sport after a 19-year absence.

Team orders will be "regulated" rather than allowed in Formula 1, FIA president Jean Todt has revealed.

Meanwhile, Jean Todt has vowed to push hard to improve the excitement in Formula 1. "We need to encourage more overtaking," he said. "In Abu Dhabi it was impossible. From now on, before a new circuit is approved, we will evaluate the potential for the spectacle as well as the safety."
