Turkish Grand Prix in 90 seconds (UK only) Runaway leader Jenson Button has vowed to maintain his intensity in trying to win every race this season for fear of his championship bid being derailed. The dominant Brawn driver, 29, has won six out of seven races in 2009 and leads the championship by 26 points. But the Englishman is concerned nearest challengers Red Bull could develop their car until it is faster than his and insists he must "keep pushing". "The situation is perfect," he said. "But it could easily go the wrong way." | These guys [Red Bull] can suddenly bolt something on that will bring them to our pace or even quicker |
Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel is the only driver to deny Button victory this year, winning the Chinese Grand Prix. The 21-year-old German was third in Sunday's Turkish GP behind team-mate Mark Webber after starting from pole position and said that the pace of Brawn and Button was too much for Red Bull at Istanbul Park. Yet Button is not ready to take his eye off race wins in favour of making sure he finishes among the frontrunners in order to collect safe drivers' championship points, as sometimes happens when a driver builds up a commanding lead. "These guys [Red Bull] can suddenly bolt something on that will bring them to our pace or even quicker," he said. "So you can't take it for granted and you've got to keep pushing. "I want to do the best job I can at every race I go to and I'm still going to make every move that I possibly can to win every race. But I know that is not going to be easy." | 606: DEBATE |
While Webber - who sits fourth in the drivers' championship 33.5 points behind Button - admits former Honda driver Button is in an "incredible position", he insists that his rival's coronation as world champion is not a formality. "To have a 26-point lead is amazing but, the way the points-scoring system is at the moment, for him to chip away is still not that easy if his main competitors are consistent." Australia's Webber was referring to the fact that there is only a two-point advantage for winning over finishing second, and the same between second and third. Second in the drivers' championship, Rubens Barrichello is hopeful his Brawn team-mate Button can be caught and insists he will fight to rein him in. "I cannot see him running away," he said. "I cannot see that because we were so fair and square for all the three years together. "One year he was better and the other year I was better. So I don't see him better now and winning every race this season. "At some point there will be a drop and I want to be there to conquer." The car was fantastic - Button (UK only) The next race is Button's home event at Silverstone on 21 June, and Button said he was thrilled to finally be going there with a competitive car. "Going there this year is obviously a different situation," he said. "I'm leading the championship. "In previous years, when the car has been difficult to drive and we haven't had any results, you're a little bit embarrassed because you've got so much support. "In a way [now], it's giving them something to really get hold of and sink their teeth into really enjoy."
