Imola redevelopment set to begin
The cars line up on the grid at Imola for the 2006 San Marino GP
Imola is hoping to host the 2007 San Marino Grand Prix on 29 April
Imola's chances of continuing to stage F1's San Marino Grand Prix have been boosted by news that redevelopment work will start at the track on 4 October.

The circuit is hoping to host the extra grand prix added to the F1 calendar this week when it was expanded from 17 to 18 races for the 2007 season.

No race is currently scheduled for the last weekend in April.

The Italian government said the aim was for "the grand prix to be held on 29 April 2007 and in following years".

Imola is the circuit where Brazilian Ayrton Senna died in 1994.

The earlier, 17-race calendar restricted both Germany and Italy to a single race each.

While Hockenheim and the Nurburgring are expected to alternate as hosts of Germany's race, Imola organisers and Ferrari have been lobbying for the San Marino Grand Prix to be reinstated.

The other race in Italy, the Italian Grand Prix, takes place at Monza.
