Fisichella has enjoyed a strong start to the season |
Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella is hoping to maintain his good start to the season with a new, improved engine at this weekend's San Marino GP. Fernando Alonso must stick with the engine that powered him to victory in Melbourne but team-mate Fisichella gets a new one a race earlier than planned.
"I've a fresh engine, and a bit more power from the new specification - that gives me a fantastic chance," he said.
"Renault has an edge at the moment, so we have to aim to win every race."
 | We decided it was important to do so, and have pushed our processes to make it happen |
Defending champion Alonso leads the standings after three rounds, with Fisichella joint second alongside McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen.
Under current F1 rules, drivers are allowed to change engines after every two races.
But Fisichella got out of that sequence when he retired from the Bahrain Grand Prix, which is why he is getting the new engine earlier than scheduled.
Renault engine supremo Denis Chevrier said the team had stepped up its development when it became clear Fisichella would be entitled to a new power unit at Imola.
"We decided it was important to do so, and have pushed our processes to make it happen," he said.
"However, this early debut may lead us to conserve some of the engine's potential performance during the race in order to not compromise reliability."
