Renault's Fernando Alonso described his victory in the German Grand Prix as a "perfect day" after title rival Kimi Raikkonen retired when leading. "It was obviously a fantastic day. I did my perfect race," the Spaniard said after establishing a 36-point over his McLaren rival in the championship.
"The car felt really good and competitive, but it was not enough to follow Kimi in the first 20 laps.
"McLaren were dominant, but the races are 70 laps not 30, and we finish."
Alonso, who has now won six races this year, admitted that he had settled for second place behind Raikkonen before the Finn's retirement with hydraulic failure.
"I thought at the time that second place was good enough," he said.
And he was hopeful that Renault would be competitive over the remaining seven races despite the McLaren's obvious superiority in Germany.
"The McLaren was so dominant all weekend and we have to improve our car in the coming races if we want to beat them," the Spaniard said.
"But we saw in the race we were a little but closer to them (than in qualifying)."
