Barrichello was forced to change his engine on Saturday |
Rubens Barrichello and Nick Heidfeld will start on the back of the grid after opting out of second qualifying ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix. The pair were docked 10 places for changing the engines on their Ferrari and Williams respectively and chose to stay off the track on Sunday morning.
Ferrari spotted a problem with Barrichello's engine ahead of Saturday's qualifying session.
Heidfeld's Williams was also fitted with a new engine on Friday.
Engine partners BMW said they had discovered a defective exhaust valve.
Heidfeld's team-mate Mark Webber was kept off the track on Friday so he would not suffer a similar penalty.
"The faulty exhaust valve could cause retirement in the race and therefore we decided not to take that risk," said BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen.
Barrichello has finished outside the top 10 in qualifying in three of the last four races.
