David Coulthard became Britain's top-scoring Formula One driver after claiming sixth place in Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix. The 33-year-old Scot surpassed Nigel Mansell's previous mark of 482 points and moved into fifth spot in the sport's all-time top-scorers list.
"I am very proud of the achievement for everyone who supported me," said Coulthard, who now has 483 points.
"This again vindicates my decision to want to be in this."
Coulthard has 13 grand prix victories to his name, although the drivers' championships has so far eluded him.
The closest he came was his second place finish in 2001 behind Michael Schumacher.
The Scot was without a drive at the end of a disappointing 2004 season for McLaren and many critics thought he would retire.
However, the Scot signed up with Formula One debutants Red Bull and is enjoying a new lease of life, grabbing two points finishes so far this season.
"David is a tremendous driver," said his Red Bull boss, Christian Horner.
"He's really a big part of the move forward we are making in terms of the development of the car, giving us direction. He's an integral part of what we are doing here.
"Hats off to him, he's had a great career but I'm sure he's got a few more points to score yet."
Michael Schumacher has garnered the most career-points in F1 with Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet all ahead of Coulthard in the list.
