It was the second time in three races that McLaren have been denied a one-two finish, and on both occasions Renault's Alonso benefited by finishing second.

"It was unfortunate what happened in the last few laps because we deserved a one-two," said Finn Raikkonen.

"I was happy with the car but we deserved both cars on the podium."

Montoya had led from the start until near the end, when his team-mate took over, but a late crash saw Alonso elevated to second.

"Juan Pablo and I don't want to race against each other too much because there is no point," said Raikkonen.

"I was quicker at one point, then we stopped and he was quicker after the re-start but I caught him up in the end."

With three races of the season remaining, Alonso needs only one third place finish to be crowned the youngest world champion in Formula One history.

"If I don't finish the races it will not be possible to win but if I keep finishing the races, which has been the target, I am in a good position," said Alonso.

"We did a fantastic race and second place is much better than I had expected.

"We don't need to risk at this part of the championship. Now I don't need to do four points more than Kimi at all, I just need six points and it doesn't matter if Kimi wins."
