Alonso cautious as title beckons

Fernando Alonso refuses to concede he is on the verge of becoming Formula One world champion despite extending his lead at the Italian Grand Prix.

The Renault driver has a 27-point lead over McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen with 40 points still available after they finished second and fourth at Monza.

"Every race is different, and if I have a problem I'm not able to recover as quick as the McLaren can," Alonso said.

"If we keep doing what we have been we will have two hands on the title soon."

The Spaniard, who would become the youngest champion in F1 history if he takes the title, gave his pointless race in Hungary last month as an example of why he and Renault must not relax.

"You only have to look at what happened in Hungary," the 24-year-old said.

"I went into that race, on one of my favourite circuits where we should have been the equal of McLaren, with a 36-point lead, but I came away with nothing, so how can I feel confident?"

He has been further cautioned by the remarkable recovery drive produced by Raikkonen at Monza.

I cannot believe these things that keep happening to me
Kimi Raikkonen
The Finn started 11th following a 10-place grid penalty for an engine change, and finished fourth despite having to make an extra stop to change a damaged tyre.

"If McLaren have a problem, say with the engine, they still finish on the podium," Alonso said. "If we have a problem then we would struggle to finish in the top five or six.

"So let's keep doing the same things we have been doing as professionally as we can, perfect weekends with no mechanical problems, good laps in qualifying and a strong race on Sundays."

Raikkonen said he would have been able to reduce Alonso's advantage had he not had his tyre problem.

"I would have won the race but for that," said the Finn, who also suffered a minor spin late on at the Parabolica as he was charging in a bid to make up places.

"This is such a disappointing day for me which could have ended much better.

"The tyre problem caused an additional stop which prevented me from benefiting from our one-stop strategy, and it is a pity the result does not reflect our performance.

"I cannot believe these things that keep happening to me, but I am not letting them get me down and I go to the next race at Spa determined to continue my fight for the title."

McLaren have a better chance of winning the constructors' title, although they still trail Renault by eight points.

Juan Pablo Montoya's victory, plus Raikkonen's points for fourth, edged the team one point closer to the championship leaders, whose second driver Giancarlo Fisichella finished in third place at Monza.
