Stewart confident over GP future

Britain will always have a Grand Prix, according to Sir Jackie Stewart.

Britain's F1 future hung in the balance last winter when commercial boss Bernie Ecclestone initially dropped Silverstone from the race calendar.

Stewart said: "Inflation costs are high in F1, so to keep it is always a task - but by hook or by crook we will always have a British Grand Prix.

"We've got such a strong motorsport industry in this country. We are all driven to keep the British Grand Prix."

Stewart, as president of the British Racing Drivers' Club, signed the deal with Ecclestone that guaranteed Silverstone's future through to 2009 after weeks of brinkmanship.

He told BBC Radio Five Live: "Other countries keep their grand prix because there's enormous (funding) coming in from the government.

"We have a grand prix this weekend in Turkey totally financed by the government and the chamber of commerce.

"It is very difficult to keep up with the rising costs - but we intend to be able to handle that."
