Karthikeyan has not settled down as quickly as his team-mate |
Jordan driver Narain Karthikeyan needs to "calm down" his approach to driving in Formula One, according to former Grand Prix driver Johnny Herbert. Karthikeyan, the first Indian driver in F1, has been less quick than fellow new boy Tiago Monteiro in his Jordan.
"Narain is a bit wild so I have just said to him: 'Calm down, be smooth, don't overdrive it'," said Herbert, now Jordan's sporting relations manager.
"Tiago is a lot calmer, a lot more confident with himself."
Herbert added that the weight of expectation could be affecting Karthikeyan's performance.
"They (the drivers) are quite different but Narain does have 1.5 billion people sitting on his shoulder and that makes life quite difficult."
Karthikeyan started his F1 debut season strongly, impressing observers with a series of strong, committed drives and outpacing his Portuguese team-mate.
But he has tailed off as the season has worn on, with an increasing number of errors creeping into his driving.
