Jenson Button said he would rather crash than concede a position after hitting a wall at the Canadian Grand Prix when running third. The BAR-Honda driver was under pressure from Michael Schumacher, who finished second, when he came to grief going into the final chicane on lap 47.
"Michael behind me was pushing me pretty hard," said Button, 25.
"I didn't want to let Michael pass and I'd rather crash in third than finish fourth really."
Not long earlier, he had made an error at the hairpin, picking up debris on his tyres.
Button added: "The problem I had in the hairpin was I ran wide and I didn't realise how much rubbish got on the tyres.
"If you look at this weekend we didn't get any points and didn't finish but we'd rather that than finish seventh or eighth in the race."
Despite the disappointment, Button has been ordered by boss Nick Fry not to get too down and to drown his sorrows with a post-race drink.
"The team have been great. They've all said it happens now and again," said Button.
