Raikkonen, who crashed out on the last lap of the European GP two weeks ago, profited from Alonso's exit in Montreal to close to within 22 points.

"We were a little bit lucky but we were so unlucky in the last race," he said.

"We got those 10 points back. We are definitely back in the championship - back and fighting again."

While Alonso made a mistake and crashed out while leading, Raikkonen profited from the disqualification of team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya to claim his third win in four races.

"The team did a great job and I am more than happy," said Raikkonen.

"The team told me to look after the car because they could see there was a problem as the steering was not straight.

"The bonus is that the Renaults did not score - it was a good win for us."

Alonso said: "It was not a good day for me. During my pit stop the fuel rig had a problem.

"In the end I went too wide, I touched the wall and damaged my car. This is a very disappointing result."

Renault also saw Giancarlo Fisichella retire with hydraulic failure when he was leading the race.

It leaves them with 76 points to McLaren's 63 in the constructors' championship with 11 races remaining.

But Renault team boss Flavio Briatore remained philosophical.

"It's Formula One, one bad day it happens. It happens to somebody else, it happens to us, it's part of the game," said Briatore.
