Jenson Button has admitted his pole position for BAR at the Canadian Grand Prix took him by surprise. Button bounced back after finishing 10th at the European Grand Prix to edge out Michael Schumacher in qualifying.
"We expected to be reasonably quick, but we didn't expect to challenge the Renaults and McLarens," he said.
"It's good to be here. It's a big boost for the team. We've had a tough few months, they have worked very hard so it's good to give them something back."
BAR made a disappointing return from a two-race ban at the Nurburgring two weeks ago when they were well off the pace.
But Button said recent tests had enabled the team to improve the aerodynamics of the car.
"The car worked really well. It was reasonably easy to drive and I think we have got a good race package," he said.
"I'm not going to say too much because I have seen the Renaults and McLarens in practice and they look good on long runs. This is a good start though.
"We've got to hope we can keep them behind us in the first few laps. If we can do that it will help us no end."
