David Coulthard said McLaren have no hope of being competitive until their new car is launched in July. The Spanish Grand Prix was the latest setback for McLaren as Coulthard and Kimi Raikkonen finished 10th and 11th.
Coulthard said the revamped car, due to appear at the German Grand Prix on 25 July, "should be an improvement".
"We're lacking overall on the car - aero, mechanical, straight-line speed," said the Scot. "Therefore you lack confidence as a driver."
Coulthard and Raikkonen battled flat-out throughout the race at the Circuit de Catalunya, which was only the second time this season both McLarens have made it to the finish.

But they were only the sixth fastest team in the race, beaten by Ferrari, Renault, BAR, Williams and Sauber.
Raikkonen's fastest race lap was 1.4 seconds slower than race-winner Michael Schumacher.
Coulthard said: "We just have to take the pain at the moment and continue to work hard to improve."
Norbert Haug, sporting director of McLaren's engine partner Mercedes, said: "Our performance was weak. There is still a lot to do and everyone in the team knows that."
The new car, which will be called the MP4-19B, will feature fundamentally revised aerodynamics and a new chassis.
