Wilson scored one point for Jaguar in 2003 |
McLaren Mercedes test driver Alexander Wurz looks close to returning to the Formula One grid next season. Wurz said on Wednesday he was in talks with F1 outfit Jaguar, where he would replace Englishman Justin Wilson.
"I am in a luxury position because teams are approaching me, making offers. This is what a driver hopes for," said Wurz.
"Jaguar has me at the top of their list and McLaren wants to do everything to keep me as their test driver".
Jaguar refused to confirm Wurz's claims, stating only it was "in the process of making a decision on the drivers for next year".
"Nothing will be confirmed until the end of November," said a spokeswoman for the team.
A move to Jaguar would see the 29-year-old Austrian replace Wilson as Australian Mark Webber's partner on the grid. Wilson, who switched to Jaguar from Minardi mid-season, scored one point in five races for the Ford-owned team in 2003.
Wurz scored 26 points in three seasons with Benetton |
The Jaguar drive is the most alluring of the few that remain on offer in F1, with the top teams having already confirmed their line-ups. Wurz entered F1 racing as a substitute at Benetton for compatriot Gerhard Berger in 1997 and scored 26 points in three full seasons.
Since 2001, he has been working as McLaren's test driver.
