| Villeneuve reveals oval dream ![]() F1 will use only one of Indianapolis' banked turns Jacques Villeneuve has claimed that the US Grand Prix would be a better race if it used more of Indianapolis' famous oval track. Sunday's Formula One action at The Brickyard takes place on aninfield road circuit. It uses just the main straight and Turn One of the main banked oval, which stages the legendary Indianapolis 500. But Villeneuve, who won the Indy 500 in 1995, believes the Grand Prix could be laid out to incorporate much more of the Speedway track.
He said: "The F1 circuit in Indianapolis isn't a bad track, although I feel it's not as good as it could be. "If I'd designed it, I'd have used both straights on the oval, not just one of them. "However, circuit design isn't my job." The Canadian added that he would love to find out how an F1 car would fare on the full oval at Indianapolis. And he believes his machine would compare favourably with the American cars he raced before moving to F1. The Canadian said: "Sometimes I wonder how a Formula One car would behave on the oval itself. "First, we'd need different tyres than the ones we currently use, and we'd have to change the set-up a lot. "If you did all that, then I reckon it would be easy to go flat for the entire lap. "We'd definitely be faster than a current Indy Racing League car." But the 1997 F1 world champion added that the idea is likely to remain in the realms of fantasy. "Sadly, I doubt we'll ever get the chance to find out," he said. |
