Formula One team boss Eddie Jordan has moved to cool his claims for his new engine deal.

Jordan has secured a supply of Ford Cosworth engines for the next three years, but he has now emphasised that it is not a works deal.

That is contrary to the implications Jordan made in announcing the deal at the Hungarian Grand Prix, in which he appeared to say it was a works-backed Ford deal.

It has emerged that Jordan will have to pay around $50m over three years for the engines - and that they will not be the same as those used by works team Jaguar.

Cosworth are building a new engine for Jaguar next year, while Jordan will use an upgraded version of the 2002 engine.

Jordan admitted at the Belgian Grand Prix: "Jaguar is the works team, Jordan is a private team. They are two different things."

And the Richard Parry-Jones, the Ford executive in charge of Jaguar, said: "Eddie has done a good job in the last few days of clearing up some of the details of that deal.

"It's not a works engine. The works engine is in the Jaguar."

The cost of the engines will partially be met by a complicated marketing deal involving Ford and Jordan's sponsor DHL, an express postal service.

Jordan's announcement of the deal in Hungary has caused major ructions at Jaguar's F1 team and at Ford headquarters in Detroit, a source has told BBC Sport Online.

Jordan dodged queries about why Ford had not yet officially confirmed the deal.

"Ford have yet to make it official," Jordan told ITV, "but it was signed at a very late hour [on the Saturday night in Hungary].

"There was no-one from Ford there to make the announcement, and I was given permission to tell journalists that the deal had been signed."

Nevertheless, the Jordan cars are expected to carry the Ford blue oval next season, which means they will be in direct competition with the US giant's Jaguar brand.

Ford, though, has committed to back Jaguar until at least the end of 2004.
