Qualifying times at the Hungarian Grand Prix

Rubens Barrichello claimed his third pole position of the year as Ferrari dominated qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Brazilian managed to outpace team-mate Michael Schumacher by 0.059 seconds - and the two left their rivals trailing in their wake.

Ralf Schumacher was third quickest for Williams, 0.4 seconds behind Barrichello but nearly a second ahead of team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya.

Ferrari's daunting advantage means that the elder Schumacher is well on course to establish a new record for wins in a Formula One season.

That the Italian team were able to dominate the way they did was partly down to their Bridgestone tyres, which are proving superior to the Michelins used by Williams and McLaren.

To back up the point, Giancarlo Fisichella guided his Jordan, which also uses Bridgestones, to fifth, ahead of both Renaults and both McLarens.

Jordan, for whom this was the best qualifying performance of the season, have not been anything like a match for those two teams for much of the year.

Jarno Trulli was the quickest Renault driver in sixth place, ahead of Bridgestone-shod Sauber drivers Felipe Massa and Nick Heidfeld and the second Renault of Jenson Button.

The McLaren team, who were expected to go well in Hungary, had a disastrous time.

They were only 10th and 11th, with David Coulthard ahead of Kimi Raikkonen.

Barrichello was the fastest man from the outset, although his qualifying session got off to a bad start when his first run was baulked by a traffic jam caused by Button spinning.

That allowed Michael Schumacher to set provisional pole, but Barrichello set out his stall shortly afterwards with a lap of 1:13.346, more than 0.6secs quicker than his team-mate.

Schumacher had two further goes to beat Barrichello, and he managed to get down to 1:13.392 before the Brazilian went faster again on his final run with a lap of 1:13.333.

"Rubens drove well and I just couldn't do better than him. It's as simple as that," said Michael Schumacher, who has donated one million euros (�642,000) to victims of flooding in Germany.

Barrichello said: "We worked well on the car, so I am pleased.

"Starting from pole position, and being on the clean side of the track, I have the best chance. I am looking forward to tomorrow when I will be positive and try to win."

Strong debut

Michael Schumacher was not happy about starting on the inside, which is much dirtier, and therefore makes getting a good start very difficult.

"It means it will be exciting starting like that, but that's what we are here for," the world champion said.

"But being on the dirty side as I am, it doesn't help me."

British driver Anthony Davidson comfortably achieved his aim of qualifying for his first Grand Prix.

He was a respectable 0.5secs slower than his Minardi team-mate Mark Webber.
