| Button looks for return to form Button is expecting his Renault to be quick Renault driver Jenson Button believes that he can challenge for a finish on the podium at this weekend's British Grand Prix. Button says that Renault should be able to recover the form they showed early in the season when they were challening McLaren for the position as third best team. In recent races McLaren have made a step forward and moved out of Renault's reach.
But Button believes that the Silverstone track will suit his car - and that he will be further aided by aerodynamic modifications to the Renault that will be introduced for the race. "It would be nice to get my first podium at Silverstone," the 22-year-old Englishman said. "We're not quick enough to qualify third or fourth on the grid and get a podium like that but we'll be as close as we can, and see what happens in the race," Button told Motorsport News. "From testing the car it seems to work well there - it's very good through corners like Becketts - so I'll go in knowing the car is more positive. I'm sure we can do it." A good performance at Silverstone would give Button a boost as he searches for a drive for next season. He is set to be replaced at Renault by rising Spanish star Fernando Alonso next year, as BBC Sport Online revealed last month. Button has had talks with Jaguar, where he could replace Eddie Irvine, who is not expected to be retained by the team as team-mate to Pedro de la Rosa.
Button has also been linked to Toyota, Sauber and British American Racing. Button is contracted to Williams, but they are expected to exercise their option on Juan Pablo Montoya to partner Ralf Schumacher, who is tied to the team until 2004. That means Williams will have to help Button find a drive for next season. Renault team bosses are also confident that the team should show better at Silverstone. Executive director of engineering Pat Symonds said: "In the last two tests at Silverstone our car has been extremely quick. "That means we approach this race with more confidence than any other so far this season. And Button's team-mate Jarno Trulli, who will stay on at Renault next season, said: "I am looking forward to a good weekend and a competitive performance." |
