Jenson Button is set to be dropped by the Renault Formula One team at the end of this year and replaced by rising Spanish star Fernando Alonso.

Button had been hoping to stay on at Renault next year - but it is now understood to be certain that Alonso, Renault's test driver, will replace him as Jarno Trulli's team-mate.

Alonso has impressed the team in testing and Trulli has been coming on increasingly strong since he joined Renault for this season.

Alonso's case was done no harm when he outpaced Jaguar driver Pedro de la Rosa in a one-off test for the team recently - and he is considered a star in the making at Renault.

Button is still under contract to Williams, where he started his Formula One career, but they are expected to stick with Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya for 2003.

Button will have to find a seat elsewhere - and the favourites at the moment are Jaguar and Toyota.

Button is said to have been in talks with Jaguar - something he refused to admit.

But the 22-year-old did reveal that he was having talks with other teams.

"We have been talking to other teams about next year, nothing too serious at the moment.

"It is not just a decision of one person, it's both sides.

"We will have to see in the next few races - myself and the team have to make a decision. There are lots of different options."

Current Jaguar driver Eddie Irvine had earlier stoked the speculation about Button's future by saying he had heard Renault would not be keeping him.

"I have heard Jenson is getting pushed out of Renault so he needs to go somewhere," said Irvine, who is in the final year of his three-season deal at Jaguar.

"I am sure he will be up and down the pit-lane trying to get in anywhere he can - it makes sense."

Renault team boss Flavio Briatore claimed that he had not yet decided upon his driver line-up for 2003.

"Honestly, at the moment I have no idea what we are going to do. I have not made any decision," Briatore said.

Button is said to have had talks with Jaguar boss Niki Lauda at the team's Milton Keynes headquarters last Tuesday.

Button, in a sardonic response to Irvine's claims, added: "Eddie knows everything about this team, obviously. Where is he going to be next year?

"This is a good team to be with but we have to explore the options.

Fernando Alonso is expected to race for Renault in 2003
Alonso is considered a rising star

"We have talked about lots of things with Flavio (Briatore, Renault boss) and from what I know they would be happy for me to be here which is good.

"I hope it will be sorted out soon because it would be nice to just concentrate on this year."

The Frome-born racer made a stunning impact in his maiden season with Williams in 2000 but was loaned to Renault because of the arrival of Colombia's Montoya.

Briatore was disappointed with Button's attitude and his supposed playboy lifestyle last season.

But he has spoken in glowing terms of the way the driver has turned things around this campaign.

Lauda is also exploring his driver options at Jaguar next season as he seeks potential replacements for Irvine and Spaniard Pedro de la Rosa.
