Ryan Champion is determined to challenge defending title holder Kevin Procter in the Christmas Stages Rally at Croft, near Darlington, this month.

The Castleton-based driver and his co-driver Jemma Bellingham from Carlisle will test their Subaru Impreza against Procter's own variant of the car.

"Kevin's the key man to beat," Champion told BBC Look North.

"We're both coming from the same stable. Although Kevin's car a bit newer we'll have a good battle."

Champion added: "Chris [Wise] will go well in the Metro 6R4 and Tony Bardy in the Nissan, so it'll probably be between the four of us.

"I've got to try to beat Kevin. Realistically it'll be tough but we'll give it a go."

Procter has won the event, which takes place on Tuesday, 28 December at Croft, near Darlington, for the past two years.
