Franchitti wins second Indianapolis 500 title

Scot Dario Franchitti outduelled England's Dan Wheldon to win his second Indianapolis 500 on Sunday.

The 2007 winner, who started in third, had just enough fuel left to cross the finish line ahead of runner-up Wheldon and his compatriot Alex Lloyd.

"This tastes just as good the second time," said Franchitti, 37.

England's Mike Conway was lucky to escape with only a broken leg after a last-lap crash that saw his car propelled into the air.

Up until Conway's crash, 2005 winner and last year's runner-up Wheldon had been closing the gap on Franchitti, who was slowing to save fuel.

But after the spectacular collision, which resulted from a bump with American Ryan Hunter-Reay, race officials brought out a caution, allowing Franchitti to finish the race with just 0.35 litres of fuel in his tank.

"Up until 10 laps to go it was pretty relaxed and then all hell broke loose with fuel saving," reflected Franchitti, who led for 155 of the Indiana race's 200 laps. "It feels great."

Franchitti's win saw Chip Gannassi become the first owner to win the Indy 500 and NASCAR's elite Daytona 500 race in the same season.

Brazil's Helio Castroneves, who started in pole position, saw his quest for his record-tying fourth Indy victory end when he stalled out leaving the pits on the 146th lap.
