Somerset rebels star rider Jay Herne has suffered a wedge fracture in his vertebrae at a meeting in Newport.

Herne, who also races for National League Bournemouth, will be out for at least two weeks.

Somerset promoter Debbie Hancock said: "Given the speed and awkwardness that he fell, it could have been a lot worse for him."

"Our thoughts are with Jay, who has certainly not had the rub of the green with his recent injuries."

Hancock added: "The club would also like to thank Newport Speedway's medical team for their prompt attention to Jay, who was in considerable pain in the immediate aftermath of his fall."
