Leon Haslam frustrated by double-second in Portugal

Leon Haslam
Each time I hit the front Biaggi came straight back down the long start and finish straight

Leon Haslam was not totally satisfied despite stretching his lead at the top of the Superbike World Championship in Portugal on Sunday.

Alstare Suzuki rider Haslam secured two second-place finishes in the second round of the Championship, both times trailing Italian Max Biaggi.

Haslam's success in the opening round means the Derbyshire man has a 16-point lead over Biaggi in the standings.

"I suppose I have to be happy but it was really frustrating," Haslam said.

"I'm disappointed not to win but overall I'll take the points and extend my lead in the championship. It is still an excellent start."

The 26-year-old won his first ever WSB race in the season opener at Phillip Island at the end of February, and followed it up with second place in race two.

And he was upset he could not edge out Aprilia rider Biaggi at the Portimao circuit to claim at least one more first place on Sunday.

"In both races, I just wanted to get in front and make the break," Haslam added. "But every time I tried I just didn't have that little extra I needed from the rear tyre.

"But we knew that would be the case and it was always going to be a closely fought day.

"Each time I hit the front Biaggi, just came straight back at me down the long start and finish straight."

Haslam has 85 points to Biaggi's 69 with Carlos Checa third on 60. The next round is in Valencia on 11 April.
