Leicester is set to have a speedway team again after being accepted into the Premier League by the British Speedway Promoters' Association. There has not been a team in Leicester since 1983 when the Lions' home on Blackbird Road was sold for housing. A new track is to be built in Beaumont Lees along with football pitches, a cycling velodrome and a BMX track. Leicester Speedway Ltd will enter a team, to be known as the Lions, when the season gets underway in March 2010. The news comes after three years of campaigning by the Leicester Speedway Supporters' Club with help from King's Lynn speedway promoter Jonathan Chapman.
